Top 3 Most Talked About Issues Concerning Facebook’s Acquisition of WhatsApp

Friday, February 21, 2014

I have been reading different articles regarding Facebook’s acquisition to a mobile messaging service called WhatsApp and it’s a trendy topic today. It has been announced that social media giant has purchased WhatsApp and its cofounder/CEO Jan Koum will be joining Facebook’s Board of Directors, how cool is that? WhatsApp will still be operating independently within Facebook, just like the case of Instagram which Facebook also acquired two years ago.

It has been quite an announcement and received different reactions over the web especially the avid users of WhatsApp who reaches over to 450 million people. Nonetheless I have observed 3 most talk about issues concerning this tremendous announcement of our very own Facebook which might also be your concern.

So here is the Top 3 Most Talked About Issues Concerning Facebook’s Acquisition of WhatsApp:

1. The $19 billion price deal.

The price has been the eye popping topic everywhere and anywhere in the web. Everyone has been talking about how Facebook paid just to acquire WhatsApp. This has been the biggest acquisition that social media giant has ever done after their purchased of photo-sharing network Instagram. That’s a lot and a lot and a lot of money, really. Thanks to Facebook that it made Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both founders, billionaires instantly.

2. Brian Acton once applied for a job in Facebook and Twitter but was turned down.

Life is indeed working its mystery. Brian once worked for Yahoo! for 11 years and after realizing that it’s time to move on with his career, he tried his luck by applying for a job to the 2 biggest companies namely as Facebook and Twitter but then he was turned down. He and his colleague Jan Koum who is also once an employee in Yahoo! had then decided to create something on their own, that people would love to use that’s when they have created WhatsApp. That is now being acquired by Facebook for $19 billion. Super WOW!

3. Since Facebook is purchasing WhatsApp would users be bombarded with ads?

I have read a comment from a WhatsApp user regarding tons of ads that might be put to this mobile messaging service. This is one of the concerns of users for WhatsApp just like what happened to Instagram. However CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that it won’t happen to WhatsApp.

“Our explicit strategy for the next several years is to focus on growing and connecting everyone in the world,” - Mark Zuckerberg

So we might as well trust his words for NOW and be mindful of any changes in the future.

These are just SOME of the controversies and concern of users for WhatsApp. There could still be MORE than I have listed here. How about you? What is your concern regarding Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp? I want to hear from you too.
